Equality and Diversity

St Wenn School is fully committed to promoting equality and celebrating diversity. This is reflected in our vision statement:

We step forward together'

Under the Equality Act 2010, we are required to publish information that shows how we give due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation

  • Advance equality of opportunity between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

  • Foster positive relationships between people from different backgrounds

  •

We are dedicated to creating an inclusive, welcoming environment where all differences are recognised, respected and valued. We aim to ensure that every pupil — regardless of race, disability, gender, religion or belief, or sexual orientation — has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We actively address any barriers to achievement and respond appropriately to incidents of discrimination or prejudice.

Through our curriculum, particularly PSHRE, pupils develop an age-appropriate understanding of protected characteristics, including age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex, and sexual orientation. Children are supported to appreciate both similarities and differences between themselves, their families and the wider community. A key aim of our school is to nurture understanding, respect for diversity and a strong sense of belonging.

We are equally committed to upholding the rights of our staff, volunteers and visitors. Wherever possible, we aim to reflect diversity within our school community, including gender balance, representation from different ethnic backgrounds and inclusion of disabled individuals. We believe this provides positive role models for our pupils and supports our role in promoting acceptance and understanding beyond the school environment.

Putting Our Principles into Practice

As an inclusive and respectful community, St Wenn School is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for everyone. We put this commitment into action by:

Ensuring no learner is disadvantaged: We regularly review the progress and attainment of all pupils, including those with protected characteristics. If differences are identified between these pupils and the wider school population, we investigate the reasons and take appropriate steps to address them.

Providing an accessible curriculum for all: Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of every child. We adapt provision where necessary and provide tailored support to help each pupil reach their full potential.

Promoting respect and tolerance: We actively uphold British values and see it as our responsibility to nurture understanding, respect and acceptance within our school community.

Encouraging open communication: We foster an inclusive environment where children feel safe to share concerns with trusted adults. We also ensure that parents feel confident approaching the school for support when needed.

Celebrating diversity: Throughout the year, we recognise world festivals and significant events. This helps build awareness and appreciation of what is important to different groups within our community.

Embedding equality in school policies: Equal opportunities are considered when developing and reviewing school policies. Our key policies are kept up to date on the website and are available from the school office upon request.
